Over the last couple of days, really since the Melo-Garnett incident, I’ve been hearing a lot of talk about how Kevin Garnett is not that great on defense anymore. Oh how I beg to differ. This season, the Boston Celtics have at times looked lost on defense when Garnett is sitting on the bench. They have no defensive spacing, and opponents score on them at will.
While on the court, the Boston Celtics are ranked 3rd in the league defensively. While on the bench, they are one of the worst teams in the league defensively, placing them in the mid-20s with teams like the Wizards and Bobcats. Also, according to 82games.com, the Boston Celtics are more than TWELVE points per 100 possessions better on the defensive end when Garnett is on the floor. That is one of, if not the biggest point differential in the league, defensively. Better than Dwight Howard, Serge Ibaka, Roy Hibbert, Tyson Chandler, LeBron James and other top defensive players. In fact, it’s not even close.
So how can you possibly say KG is not one of the league’s top defenders still (at least of the bigmen)?
